The history of EQM

In 2001, The Peak District National Park Authority developed the concept of an environmental award scheme.

The concept took shape and became the Peak District Environmental Quality Mark with a focus on celebrating a passion for place and the environment. The original concept focused on farms and tourism businesses in the Peak District, but it soon widened to include any business or organisation.

A decade later in 2011, the EQM was entirely reviewed and upgraded, and validated by VisitEngland.

The EQM scheme is now run by a not-for-profit community interest company, but the scheme is owned and officially awarded by the authorities in these areas, the Peak District National Park Authority and Staffordshire County Council, respectively.

The new scheme can be replicated and customised for any destination.
