Chatsworth Estate
Award date: 11th May 2020
The Chatsworth Estate has made clear and significant strides on their journey towards sustainability: the assessor saw strong evidence of leadership from the Duke's son, Lord Burlington, and real passion, enthusiasm and pride among staff interviewed in their environmental, social and economic activities. Renewables projects such as the extensive installation of biomass boilers across the estate, ground-source heating systems, the combined heat and power plant at the house and the new hydroelectric turbine will move the estate closer to energy self-sufficiency. Extensive educational access to the house, garden, woodlands and farmyard is in evidence through the work of the Devonshire Educational Trust. Particular projects targeted towards harder to reach groups are carefully designed to have real social impact. The immense passion among the estate farm shop team for high quality locally sourced food results in a highly significant spend in the local economy. The Triple Bottom Line Assessment undertaken by NEF Consulting in 2013 and the recently developed annual reporting system have given the Devonshire Group the framework to continue their work towards an increasingly sustainable future.
