Alan and Alison try to enhance wildlife at Lower Wigginstall by using farming practices that aren’t intensive – allowing sheep and cattle to graze a range of pastures. Building improvements mean that cows are now in loose housing over winder – “exercising all the time, doing as cows should do”. Muck is stored under cover in line with best practice, avoiding polluting run-of and allowing it to be spread on fields at the best time of year to improve the grass and avoid the need for nitrogen fertiliser.
